Details

Date: 6 July 2020
Interview number: 013
Interviewee: Michelle Bootes, Life Member Pambula SLSC and 2020 Bega Citizen of the Year
Venue:
At home, Merimbula, New South Wales

Description

We met up with Michelle at her home in Merimbula, in fact, we had stayed the night after being invited by Michelle and Peter into their home.

After a big breakfast of bacon and eggs, we spoke about Michelle’s 25+ years as a lifesaver, the amazing Same Wave initiative (getting people with disabilities involved in surf lifesaving) she founded in 2000, and the impact the fires had on the community during the summer (including what it was like to ocean swim during that period).

A little snippet

In this snippet from the full podcast interview, Michelle talks about they were a little scared when they started up the ‘Special Nippers’ (as it was known back then), how the experts even doubted the idea and a couple of the lessons they learnt early on – including an unforeseen issue with an ice-pop!
