10 ways to spark your swim motivation (before spring hits)

Let’s be honest, winter swimming tests even the most committed ocean lovers – I should know, I usually sit the whole season out (unless I’m in the Whitsundays, of course!).

The mornings are dark, the doona’s warm, and your togs suddenly feel like they’ve been in the freezer.

But here’s the good news: we’re on the home stretch.

With the worst of winter behind us, it’s the perfect time to stay strong, finish well, and start thinking about what lies ahead – sunny mornings, salty swims, and a fresh new season of ocean swimming.

So if you’ve slowed down (or haven’t quite started yet), here are my tried-and-tested tips to help you finish winter strong and roll into spring feeling confident, fit, and ready for anything.

1. Don’t wait, start today

If you’ve been meaning to get back in the water, now’s the time. The days are getting longer, the water’s slowly warming, and your summer self will thank you later.

2. Lock in your swim days

Pick your days and protect them like gold. When swimming’s in the diary, it’s harder to skip – and much easier to keep the habit going into the new season.

3. Swim when the sun’s up

Early mornings or late arvo swims can feel like a struggle in winter. Instead, aim for a lunchtime dip or a mid-morning weekend swim. There’s something energising about swimming in daylight, especially when it’s crisp and clear.

4. Buddy up

It’s always easier to stay committed when someone’s counting on you. Share the motivation, share the laughs, and keep each other moving toward that first event of the season.

5. Dress warm, feel brave

Getting to the pool is half the battle – especially when you’re cold before you start. Layer up, keep cosy, and never underestimate the power of Ugg boots and a beanie.

6. Don’t overthink it

Once you’re poolside, don’t muck around. Strip off and jump in before your brain talks you out of it. That first splash is the worst bit – it’s all good from there.

7. Change it up

Keep things fresh with new sets, new gear, or even a cheeky swim technique session. Winter’s a great time to focus on skills and shake up your training before the summer build begins.

8. Pick up the pace

Nothing warms you up faster than a solid hit-out. Start with an easy warm-up, then get that heart rate up. You’ll be surprised how quickly the chill disappears.

9. Make post-swim plans

Knowing there’s a hot shower or a strong coffee waiting for you makes all the difference. Wrap your session in a feel-good reward and you’ll start looking forward to the whole experience.

10. Keep summer in sight

This is your runway to the season. Whether you’re dreaming of your first ocean swim or want to feel more confident at the beach, what you do now sets the tone for summer.

Final thought…

With spring just around the corner, now’s your chance to build momentum, get back into rhythm, and enjoy everything this transition season has to offer. Winter’s nearly done – but the best swimming is yet to come.
