Details

Date: 16 June 2020
Interview number: 004
Interviewee: John Van Wisse, Marathon Open Water Swimming Champion
Venue:
At home, Brighton, Melbourne

Description

We met up with John Van Wisse at his home in Brighton and we had an hour before he had to speed off to coach another swim session.

John has a long and successful career in marathon open water swimming, including numerous Channel crossings, a circumnavigation of Manhatten Island, and swimming across Port Phillip Bay – many of which were records at the time. When swimming alone became too easy, John added the run and bike to claim the fastest man to complete the Enduroman Arch 2 Arc from London to Paris.

On top of his career achievements, we also talk about the training involved, mentoring new marathon swimmers and his passion for coaching.

A little snippet

In this snippet from the full podcast interview, John talks about the history of marathon swims across and around Port Phillip Bay, name dropping a number of local marathon swimmers including Australian swimming legends Dawn Fraser and Des Renford.
