North Curl Curl 3 Points Challenge & ocean swim

North Curl Curl Beach is the host of a one-of-a-kind event, comprising of three very different challenges.

There is the 3 Points Challenge: a swim-run-swim-run-swim-run event with a massive $1000 prize up for grabs for first place.

The second part is of the day at North Curl Curl is the ocean swim: a 2km ocean swim at the northern end of the beach.

Finally, there’s the Invitational Dash for Cash: a series of sprints and a short swim out past the break.

The entire day at North Curl Curl is a great chance to get out and enjoy the summer sun on Sydney’s northern beaches.

Swim courses

The 3 Points Challenge on North Curl Curl Beach will challenge even the best of athletes.

It combines the skills of surf swimming with the stamina of cross country running.

The race starts on the beach in front of North Curl Curl Surf Lifesaving Club, and the first swim is a 300m swim out into the surf and back onto the beach.

The second leg is a 1500m run south along the sand dunes and down to South Curl Curl.

The third leg is another 300m swim at South Curl Curl.

Then there’s another 1000m run along the rock face towards Freshwater Beach.

The second last leg is a quick 200m swim at Freshwater Beach.

The final stage is a 2.5km run to North Curl Curl, before a 200m dash along the sand to the finish line.

It’s something to challenge even the toughest of athletes, but there’s big rewards, with $1000 up for grabs for first place in the men and women’s elite divisions.

The second part of the North Curl Curl Beach event is a 2km ocean swim.

It starts in the northern corner of North Curl Curl Beach, with swimmers swimming 150m into the surf before making a turn north towards Dee Why.

After about 500m, swimmers will make a right hand turn, and eventually back towards South Curl Curl.

When they reach the final third of the swim, they’ll make another turn back towards North Curl Curl, before eventually finishing at the same point they started.

It’s another lucrative event, with $800 up for grabs for male and female place-getters.

The last part of the North Curl Curl Ocean Swim is the Invitational Dash for Cash.

It takes the top three male and female finishers in both the 3 Points Challenge and Ocean Swim events and invites them to take part in the Dash for Cash.

It starts with a swim out from the beach at North Curl Curl, finishing with a beach sprint up the sand.

The last two competitors at the end of each leg will be eliminated, with the winners of each round earning a share of the cash pool of $700.

While you’re there

Besides the beach, there’s not a lot to do in North Curl Curl if you’re looking to head away from the beach. You could head south to Manly and enjoy a day out amongst the hip and happening.

Vegetarians rejoice, there’s a little place called Emilia’s on Griffin Road worth trying out.

Gusto on the Beach is down at South Curl Curl surf club, or for something local, try COOH cafe and roaster for coffee and something to eat.

Travel and parking

There are two fairly decent beach carparks, the largest one is off Griffin Street, south of the surf club, and there’s one at the end of Huston Parade on the north side of the lagoon.
