Guidelines For Event Organisers

In Australia, Coastsafe (by SLSA) has developed the Aquatic Event Management Safety Guidelines to provide guidelines on the safety requirements for special events where aquatic activity occurs or is expected to occur.

The guidelines cover:

  • Risk management plan for the event(s)
  • General safety
  • Key safety officials
  • Vessel (craft/boats) related sporting events
  • Sport safety evaluation
  • First aid guidelines for single and multi-discipline events
  • Application to water safety organisations for water safety supervisory services
  • Course type and distance
  • Water safety ratio guidelines for normal lifesaving events
  • Water safety ratio guide

Independent event organisers should make themselves aware of these guidelines when organising an aquatic event.

Surf life saving clubs organising events should consult the Guidelines for Safer Surf Clubs, Volume 4: Event Sanctioning and Management resource which includes contacting your State office for event approval.

New Zealand event organisers should view Surf Life Saving New Zealand’s Event Safety info for Clubs and Event Safety Guidelines.
