Dip for Dempsey swim
Fri, 9 Mar 2018
The Dip for Dempsey is a 2km open water swim located in the Hume Dam (formally the Hume Weir) as a fundraiser for a local waterpolo player, Nick Dempsey, who suffered a serious spinal injury at home on his 21st birthday (read more).
The Friday evening swim, which you can enter for only $30 ($20 juniors), will be based on the shady foreshore of the Albury Wodonga Yacht Club, and the freshwater swim will take place in the sheltered bay.
There is also a 500m swim for beginners and a 500m swim for under 14’s, making it an event for the whole family in a rare inland open water swim.
While you’re there, check out the Hume Dam itself, soak up a bit of culture at the Murray Art Museum, and take a walk around the Albury Botanic Gardens.
There are two swim distances available: a 2km loop course tucked in the sheltered bay next to the yacht club open to all ages, and a 500m circuit for beginners and 14 and under’s.
While you’re there
See as it’s provided the swim location, go and check out the Hume Dam itself, then soak up a bit of culture at the Murray Art Museum, and take a walk around the Albury Botanic Gardens.
Mr. Benedict is a highly rated cafe on Dean Street (do the obvious and try the eggs benedict), grab a coffee from Cafe Escala and a delicious treat from Patty’s Patisserie.
Travel and parking
There’s plenty of parking along the road that leads into the yacht club. Take Old Weir Road off Bonegilla Road, then take the second right into the gravel road after a couple of hundreds metres (the first right will be a house). Stick right at the fork.
