Choosing a wetsuit

Wetsuits are a fantastic way to keep warm and are great for increasing buoyancy to allow you to swim with greater efficiency.

In this lesson you will learn how to make the right decision when choosing a wetsuit for open water swimming.

Learning outcomes

  • Recognise the difference between a surfing and a swimming wetsuit
  • Understand the principles behind wetsuit design

Fit for purpose

The biggest mistake swimmers make with wetsuits is to buy a wetsuit designed for surfers. Keep away from the surfing brands and purchase a proper swimming/triathlon wetsuit.

Surfing wetsuits are designed to be a little looser and for sitting up out of the water, swimming wetsuits are designed to be a bit tighter and move through the water fast.

Wearing just a wetsuit top is a great way to keep your upper body warm but still keep the lower body free. The increased buoyancy also helps make swimming easier.

Visit specialist triathlion/multisport shops for the best range of open water wetsuits.
