Wild swimming and training camp

The ultimate wild swimming adventure

Come on a training camp and wild swimming adventure with us as we head south of Sydney to Killalea State Park in Shellcove and surrounding aquatic locations.

This long-weekend camp has it all; ocean swimming training and ocean swims, a swim into and down a river, a lake swim and rest & relaxation swims in scenic coastal coves.

The ocean swimming training component alone will combine our Learn to ocean swim, Negotiating the surf and Open water swimming clinic content, and we’ll even hit the pool for some early morning fitness and skill development.

In-between all the swimming, you’ll get to enjoy the chilled out surrounds of the state park, meet new friends and toast marshmallows on the bonfire.

This camp isn’t for the city princess! We’ll be ‘roughing it’ in shared bunk-room accommodation, eating camp food, and sitting around the campfire under the stars!

Leave the city, break away from the grind of the day-to-day and switch off the technology as our experienced instructors take you on a journey you’ll never forget.

Tentative camp dates for 2017-18 @ Killalea are: 10-12 Nov, 23-25 Feb (Incl. Wollongong ocean swim) & 6-8 April (Incl. Shellharbour ocean swim).

The swim components

You’ll get to experience all this:

  • An ocean swim at a beach so amazing it’s a national surfing reserve
  • Get ‘sucked’ into a river mouth and swim down stream
  • Jump off a pier into glassy water and swim across the lake
  • Enjoy a relaxing swim and sunbathe at beautiful wild swimming locations
  • Morning pool fitness and technique sessions in an ocean pool
  • Personal feedback and attention from instructors all weekend
  • All this in a safe, comforting environment with a water safety ratio of 1:4
  • Some camps also include participation in a local ocean swim event

*Note, all swims are weather and conditions dependant.

Common questions

When are camps scheduled?

Wild swimming camps are scheduled throughout the summer season, with one usually in January, February and March.

Keep an eye out on the website for when camps are scheduled, and book in early to avoid missing out!

How many people come along?

The camp is open to a maximum of 18 swimmers and we support participants with an instructor ratio of 1:6.

The average camp size is 12 swimmers.

Do I have to have completed an OceanFit clinic to come along?

No. This clinic is run at a beginner level, with options for longer swims for those fit and able.

You will complete ocean swimming training from the level 1, level 2 and level 3 clinics.

What training will we do?

You will complete ocean swimming training from the level 1, level 2 and level 3 clinics.

This is a great way to get all the content from both level 1, level 2 and level 3, plus all the other swims in one great-value package ($537 when purchased individually).

You pay for your training and get your holiday for free! – just about 😉

Where do we stay and what do we eat?

We will be staying at the Killalea State Park camp ground. You can choose from a bunk room bed, or you can bring your own tent.

We’ll eat classic camp food, like bacon and eggs, BBQ’s and sandwiches. We’ll also head out to the local pub for dinner one night. If you have special food requirements we can discuss this with you.

Can I stay locally, in my own accomodation?

No. The beauty of this camp is that we all stay together, build strong friendships, and work together to prepare meals.

We also have a very tight schedule with loads to fit in, so we need everyone together to get things moving fast.

What will I need to bring?

We’ll send you a comprehensive list of swimming, sleeping and general clothing and equipment requirements to ensure you’re comfortable and ready to take on all those swims!

What if I don't want to do a swim?

We’re not going to make you do anything. There’ll be plenty of options to swim, but if you choose to sit one out, we’re sure you’ll be able to look after yourself.

How to we get there and around?

We’ll be renting vans to chaperone you around the activities. It’s much better value for money and it keeps everyone together.

If you’d like to drive, please discuss this with us first.

How long are the swims?

The swims vary in length from 750m to 2km, with some swims merely social dips.

The shorter swim lengths are fixed for everyone, the longer swims have short and long course options.

How far to I have to be able to swim non-stop to participate?

You need to be able to comfortably swim 1km to come to camp.

Am I too old? too young? Who does the camp cater for?

This camp is for swimmers 18+ only.

We accommodate swimmers of all ages, whether you’re 25 or 65! All we care about is that you bring a chilled-out, fun and courageous attitude because this camp is about making the most of conditions no matter what we’re dealt with.

We’re also going to be spending a lot of time together, so being social and getting on with others is really important – no boring people allowed 😉

What wild swimmers say

The wild swimming camp was fantastic – I really enjoyed it, and would definitely like to do another one! The location was perfect – a short, easy drive from Sydney, and lots of good, varied swimming spots (ocean, river, lake and pool!). Camping, BBQs, campfire and dinner out were all fun too. Overall, it was a great experience that I would definitely recommend.

I have been swimming with OceanFit for 3 years, so when the opportunity for a swim camp came up, it seemed only natural to give it a go. The result was a fun-filled weekend brimming with new swimming challenges and some of my longest swims to-date. I particularly liked the variation that was on offer as no two swims were alike. Overall, it was a rewarding experience shared by a group of like-minded ocean swimmers. I would highly recommend this to anyone who enjoys a good swim.

What a great weekend! I’ve never done anything like it before and wouldn’t have done without OceanFit. I got to meet some great people, my confidence has grown in open water and it was really fun. It reminded me of when I’ve been on ski trips – outside all day, adventurous, working up an appetite and feeling nicely exhausted… and I love ski trips!

It is now a week after my OceanFit camp and I have told at least 10 people to attend a camp. I am now concerned that there may not be space for me next year. I had a ball, learnt heaps and will be attending next year.

I had an excellent time on the OceanFit wild swimming weekend! We had lots of great swims in a variety of locations (ocean, river, pool). I learnt a lot and got plenty of opportunity to put my new skills into practice! I would highly recommend this trip to anyone who enjoys swimming.

The Oceanfit Camp has given me the confidence and skills to swim in a variety of environments. The structure of the training and the excellent instructors made this an extremely valuable experience. I am looking forward to the next one.

The 3 days away with the OceanFit team was time well spent. All in the team were knowledgeable and consistent with what they taught, along with being friendly, inclusive and clearly interested in teaching. I learnt so much more about the ocean and swim skills to get in and out of the surf. Had a fun weekend away and would jump at the chance to do it again!

OceanFit’s camp was a great experience for people needing experience swimming in a group and wanting to gain confidence in the ocean and have fun in the water. Beautiful location as well.

I really enjoyed this camp. I learnt a whole lot of skills about swimming in the ocean and how to ‘read’ surf. I would recommend this camp to anyone interested in open water swimming whether you are a newby or more experienced as Andre and his team will ensure you learn a lot and have fun doing it

I had a great time learning with OceanFit. One unexpected benefit was a better understanding of the different challenges we all face as swimmers. I learnt a lot about practical ocean techniques – highly recommended as both a learning and recreational experience.

A very fun weekend that had a lot packed into it – I learnt a lot and did things I didn’t think I would ever be able to do!- the food and accommodation were good choices.
