Swim Sydney Harbour

Swim Sydney Harbour is a reincarnation of the Great Sydney Swim that used to be run by Olympian and Ironman, Ky Hurst, and that now falls under the banner of the Australia Swims campaign by Swimming Australia.

Arguably one of the most iconic swims in the country, the Swim Sydney Harbour takes place in Farm Cove, just under the watchful eye of the Sydney Opera House.

There are three courses as part of the Great Sydney Swim: a 300m kids swim, the 750m middle distance, and the main 2km swim around Farm Cove.

Swim courses

Each of the three swims in the Sydney leg of the Great Australian Swim Series start right under the Opera House.

The 300m kids swim is a simple course that goes out 150m and back 150m.

The middle distance 750m swim is similar, but goes out a bit further into Farm Cove.

The 2km main event starts from the same point under the Opera House, but follows the perimeter of Farm Cove, eventually finishing back at the Opera House.

All of Australia’s greatest Olympian swimmers started off as keen juniors, and it’s hoped some of them will be accompanying the kids around this rectangle course right off the pontoon under the Opera House.

This event gives beginners an opportunity to give open water swimming a go by making your way around the buoys in a clock wise direction in the comfort of Farm Cove.

There’s nothing like it in Australia, starting under the Opera House, the 2km course follows the perimeter of Farm Cove, eventually finishing back at the Opera House – what a sighting landmark!

While you’re there

If all goes to schedule, the Great Sydney Swim will be done and dusted by midday, leaving you with the rest of your day to celebrate your achievements and revel in the beauty of Sydney Harbour.

Take a walk around the Royal Botanic Gardens, get up close and personal with the Opera House and raise a glass at the Opera Bar while you’re there.

Travel and parking

Public transport is the go for today, you won’t be the only one looking for a park near the harbour! This is a no-brainer, take a bus or the train to Circular Quay and enjoy your day in the city, including a celebratory beverage, without the hassle of expensive parking or holding back on the celebration.

If you do drive, get there super early and park in the Sydney Opera House carpark.
