South Maroubra ocean swim
The South Maroubra ocean swim is fresh on the ocean swims calendar for the 2016/17 and extends the eastern suburbs swims to another beach to compliment Bondi, Bronte, Coogee and Malabar.
Comprising of three swim distances; 500m, 1km and 2km, the event is fit for the whole family, no matter what level you’re all at. Start starting? Try out the 500m (from 9 years), been doing a little bit of training? have a go at the 1km, and ready to step it up? take on the epic 2.5km course across the bay and back.
After the event, stick around for a BBQ at the surf club, there’ll also be presentations for those swimming for the podium, and there’ll be live entertainment to enjoy as you bask in your own success.
All the swims are out around swim buoys, starting and finishing in front of the South Maroubra surf club.
The 500m swim (8.15am) is a short rectangle, off the beach, across the back of the surf heading south, and then back to the beach.
The 1km swim takes a similar course to the 500m, except it’s heading further out to sea, and dipping slightly further south as you swim parallel to the beach.
The 2.5km swim is much different. This course heads out to sea, before taking a sharp left-hand turn north, snaking its way across the beach to the northen headland. Once you turn just short of the headland, you’ll then proceed to swim across the entire bay back to the south headland, before turning right and heading back to the beach. This is an epic swim for the fit and courageous.
While you’re there
For years Maroubra was the forgotten suburb in the east, not any more.
You’ll still find free parking (yes, it’s unbelievable), big rolling sand dunes in the south and undeveloped headlands that make you feel a million miles from the city.
Well regarded as a surfing beach (just be mindful of stealing any locals waves), the beach suburb is developing it’s own little cafe culture – but in a super chilled way.
Lets hope it stays this way for a while longer yet, so we can enjoy places like the highly rated Pool Cafe (north of the beach on Marine Parade), The Bay Bakehouse (try the rice rolls, Vietnamese salad or treat yourself to a lamington), and The Bay Hotel (for a nice cold beer and hit-the-spot pub food).
Travel and parking
Yeeeeeeeeeew! There’s free beach parking in Maroubra and plenty of it! #happydays
Still, get there early to get your spot, and grab a coffee while you wait for your swim.
Buses into Maroubra from Bondi Junction include the 353, 317, and 400. From the city, catch the 397, 373, 396 and 353.
