Forries Island ocean swim
The annual Forries Island ocean swim at Forrester’s Beach is a 3km ocean swim on NSW’s Central Coast and is part of the Coke Memorial Charity Surf Festival to raise money in memory of local surfer Dave ‘Coke’ Wards.
Now into its second decade, the ocean swim is just part of a larger event that also includes a surf contest, charity auction, and more.
Taking place at the start of October, it’s a great chance for people from all over NSW to make the day trip to the Central Coast and test themselves at one of the state’s finest surf beaches.
The swim event has been growing over the years, and in 2013 more than 150 swimmers took part.
The Coke Memorial Charity Surf Festival
The Coke Memorial Charity Surf Festival at Forrester’s Beach is now more than a decade old, but even older than that is the surfing contest that celebrates 25 years in 2014.
The event is named after Dave ‘Coke’ Wards, a local who loved competitive surfing from a young age.
He was an important member of the local community, a massive supporter of surfers both young and old, and a leader among the boardriders in his area.
Wards was diagnosed with leukemia and in 1989, lost his battle with the disease.
Since then, the local community has banded together to hold memorial events in his honour and to raise money for leukaemia research.
There are three courses in the Coke Memorial Charity Surf Festival at Forrester’s Beach: the Forries Island ocean swim, a 3km swim around Forries Island; a 1.5km swim; and a 300m swim for juniors.
Forrester’s Beach is actually home to one of the Central Coast’s best offshore reefs, which on the right day can hold some fantastic waves for surfers and bodyboarders.
The main 3km course circumnavigates this reef, while the 1.5km swim and the 300m swim stay closer to the beach and steer clear of the reef.
The kids swim completes the family ocean swim day out, and is nestled inside the bay, close to shore.
A leisurely 1.5km swim around the buoys off the beach and inside the reef.
A beautiful 3km swim around Forries Island, starting and finishing at the same spot on the beach.
While you’re there
Forrester’s Beach is one of the Central Coast’s hidden gems.
Just 90 minutes from the centre of Sydney, it’s the perfect chance to get away from the hustle and bustle of the concrete jungle and onto one of the most beautiful beaches in this part of Australia.
Not only is a fantastic place to swim, but it’s a great place to explore away from the beach, with stunning clifftop views of the beach below not far away at Wyrrabalong National Park.
Travel and parking
Loads of residential street parking near the beach.
