Ocean swims for your Easter holidays

The Easter holidays are here, with four days of pure leisure at your disposal.

Whether you’re having a staycation, or tripping up or down the coast to find your piece of paradise, there may be an ocean swim near you.

There’s one NZ swim and a handful on offer in Australia.

Long weekends are a great time to get away from home and try ocean swims a little further out of your bubble. Regional swims are smaller and generally more social too.

No events near you? Why not meet up with a local ocean swimming group, they’re located all over the country and members love meeting new ocean swimmers.

A wet and wild weekend in The Palms

Over a long weekend (16-18 March) we hiked into the Royal National Park with nine keen ocean swimmers for our most recent Wet & wild weekend.

It was a beautifully balanced 3-days of wild swims, ocean swimming and training.

In between all the swimming, we chilled out in the peaceful surrounds of Burning Palms, soaking up the sound of the surf by day, and the brightness of the stars by night.

Here’s a look at what we got up to (Facebook gallery). Wish you were there? Join us next season!

How to take awesome photos in the ocean with a GoPro

The GoPro is the go-to camera for action sports, and is very popular with ocean swimmers.

I’ve been filming with a GoPro for years, using them in OceanFit lessons and socially.

Any time you use a camera in the ocean environment you’re up against it – it can be hit and miss at the best of times, even with the very best equipment.

I’m often asked for tips on taking photos in the ocean using a GoPro, so here are my top tips for protecting your camera, minimising fogging, and reducing water spots.

Ocean swimming keeps the black dog at bay for Hanby

Criminal lawyer Justin Hanby was diagnosed with bipolar disorder in 2013 and he now swims daily as a way to take control of his mental health.

He’s a passionate advocate for the Black Dog Institute – raising money for them through his swimming – and is currently on top of his age bracket on the Swimming NSW Summer Swim Leader Board.

His result in the Cole Classic will be crucial in order for him to secure a series win.

Let’s find out more about Justin, and get some tips for your next ocean swim, from someone who does lots of them!
